Game stuff. An explanation on alignment.
I can help by briefly showing some examples of different alignments within the church.
Lawful good. LG characters believe in the laws of the church and the lands. They believe in the sanctity of Papal bulls and proclamations. A prospective heretic brought forth would be tried and damned only under clear evidence. Otherwise they would be detained or set free under conditions. Penitents must show clear signs or evidence of remorse and penance before absolution is given.
Neutral good. NG characters believe in the good that the Light represents. They do believe in the laws of the church and land and take great lengths to ensure their work and lives respect those laws. However if it comes to a point where their own notion of goodness is tested they might very well bend or ignore laws. For example, an aged mother and her 16 year old son was caught red handed evoking druidical powers to provide for themselves and a starving village. The NG character might sentence the mother to a quick death and take the son under his wing to prevent any further practice of witchcraft seeing as how he is still young. Even though the laws quite clearly state that they should both have burned at the stake to be cleansed by holy fire.
Chaotic Good. CG characters feel an overriding purpose to serve the Light first and all else be damned. An example would be an inquisitor who always get overlooked for promotion due to his blatant disregard of rules in pursuing corrupt clergy but whose piety and good heart are unquestioned. As long as he detects evil within their souls, regardless of whether they are nobility or clergy, he will consign their souls to the Light. Or a monk who pursues and kills a rich merchant after the King himself has acquitted him of a series of gruesome murders.
